Barn Owl sighting

My friend Tom told me he had seen a barn owl flying around a certain area near to his house, so he took me to have a look. On that visit we didn’t see the owls but we did locate the nest!

After spotting the man-made nest box in a disused barn we crept in closer trying not to disturb anything that might be in the box. We stepped around lots of owl pellets and twigs to get into easy watching distance. We unfortunately did not see any thing but we distinctly heard tiny scratching noises of something inside.  I set up my trail cam and we left so as not to disturb them too much. I will report back as soon as I have some more information.

The image above is one of three barn owls we frequently saw last year fairly close to the new nest location.  It’s great to know that they are still around as we thought the wet winter might have caused them some problems. We’ve submitted the location to the Barn Owl Trust.
